Whatever your taste, tonic is certainly a refreshing change for the better...
The temptations of such a carefully composed wine list are difficult to resist. But the award winning locally brewed Emerson's, on tap in all its affable personalities, also offers great rewards for the beer lover. Special releases direct from the brewery, such as Brewers Reserves and seasonal release beers, make for tasteful events in every sense.
Another sensational highlight is settling in for a responsibly guided journey through the seriously impressive range of craft / micro brewery beers – each selected as an outstanding example of a local, regional or national brew. The odd International beer is even admitted (if it measures up to local high standards).
Metres from central Dunedin's bustling Octagon, yet far enough from the madding crowd to be a haven of independent flavours and ambiance – tonic is the perfect space for exploration and conversation, at any stage of your evening.
As a special bonus, join the Society of Beer Advocates (SOBA), and receive $1 off your pint of tap beer with your SOBA card.

Emerson's North by North Czech Style Pilsner
Primarily a Christchurch band, The Bats have strong links to Dunedin and are usually grouped in with the Dunedin Sound bands. Bob Scott, vocals and guitar, lives in Port Chalmers, and often enjoys Emerson's at the Inchbar. We are huge fans of these guys and we are happy to claim them in our Dunedin Sound Series for an excuse to brew a great classic Czech style Pilsner. The release of the band's new album 'Free all the Monsters' encouraged us to brew a 'monster' Czech style pilsner we call North by North after their hit of the same name.
North by North is a wee monster in many ways but what we are most proud of is the long, long, maturation or lagering, we gave 'North by North'. Long lagering creates a pilsner with a rich, mellow malt flavour, backed up by generous amounts of Czech Saaz hop to provide a crisp firm finish. In the mainstream brewing world long lagering times are a no-no, it ties up too much tank space for too long – brewery accountants hate it! Brewers love it – North by North is a testament to doing something well and doing it right;
100% Czech malt, 100% Czech hops, Czech Yeast – no compromise
We know you will appreciate this Pilsner, try it side by side a typical Euro style 'lager' and taste the difference, you'll see why we are proud of this beer. There are only 80 kegs of North by North, enjoy it while you can. Next release... maybe Bird Dog Pale Ale maybe...
Here's to Summer and great beer wherever you are!
Cheers

SEASONAL RELEASES:
Emerson's JP 2011:
A traditional Belgian style Tripel showcasing NZ hops and malt. Subtle apple and spice with a luscious "caramello" finish.
9.0% ABV
Emerson's Weizenbock:
A Bavarian cloudy Weiss or Wheat beer brewed to bock strength. The overall impression is a beer that is strong and malty, rich, full bodied and warming. Flavours of chocolate, Christmas cake, raisins, dark fruits and even a hint of Easter spices and clove characters.
8% ABV
LIST OF DRINKS |
Here's an account of the drinks we generally prefer to stock – but we always make a point of carefully hand selecting the finest wines, beers and spirits from the available market range. As a result, the odd individual drink on our list may vary without notice.
ON TAP:
Epic Pale Ale - 5.4%
You know it. You love it. It just tastes bigger. It's back on tap.
Tuatara Hefe - 5.0%
"Wheat beers have been around for centuries, but you can still startle unsuspecting New Zealanders with a good one. Most beer malts are barley-based, but a portion of wheat in the mash results in a sweeter, cloudier base. In combination with a Weinstephan yeast, this produces distinctive flavours of ripe banana, vanilla and clove. (Don’t be alarmed, they all do that.) Hop additions are used to balance the sweetness, but things never get bitter like the Australians when they lose the cricket."
- Tuatara Brewing
Brew Moon Dark Side Stout - 6.0%
A strong, dark and full flavoured beer with chocolate malts and roast barley, balancing the higher alcohol content, creating a beer that is creamy and very easy to drink.
Emerson's Pilsner - 4.9%
A "Kiwi Classic", Pilsner is a showcase for Nelson grown Riwaka hops, oozing citrus and passionfruit aromas and flavours before a long dry finish. Delicious.
Emerson's Bookbinder - 3.7%
A wonderfully drinkable interpretation of a classic English ale. "Booky" is a delicious blend of four malts and two classic Nelson grown hops.
A great session ale.
